Barcolana Regatta – Trieste

The Race:

This race is focused around sailing and is a major festival celebrating sailing culture and the wider area of Trieste. Originally the race started as a single race but has extended into a multi-week event. There are estimates of 25,000 sailors who are involved in the race and upwards of 1/4 of a million tourists and spectators that watch the race. Add this to the list of must see and do sailing events the world over. The race takes part in the Gulf of Trieste which is a shallow bay of the Adriatic Sea. It is located in the extreme northern part of the gulf and is part of the Gulf of Venice. This water way is bounded and is shared by Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. The gulf is closed to the south by the peninsula of Istria. This peninsula is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. Sailing this race involves a long stay. The reason for the stay, is that there is so much to see and do. From Venice to the Croatia coastline with stunning waters, history and culture to celebrate, you will find that you run out of time too quickly to fit everything in.

The peninsula of Istria is shared between Croatia and Slovenia. The entire Slovenian sea is part of the Gulf of Trieste. With the surrounded landscape and waters edge becoming a natural amphitheatre for the race. Lock this one in!

The Track:

The race is 15Nm and starts between Miramre Castle and the seat of the Societa Velica di Barcola e Grgnano.

The course is a fixed mark course with typically 4 sides. In 2014 the finish line moved off Piazza Unità d’Italia. The races course has changed over the years and has also included a mark in Slovenian waters.

History:

The race started in 1969 by Societa Velica di Barcola e Grignano which included fifty yachts. The Barcolana became the Guinness World Record holder in February 2019 when it was named “the greatest sailing race” with its 2,689 boats and over 16,000 sailors on one start line.
